Golf Carts, Island Time and Other Things to Know Before You Go

Harbour Island is easy to love and easy to navigate, but a few local customs and practical details make the first day or two even smoother. Here is what we share with every first-time guest.

Getting Around

Golf carts are the main way to get around the island. The roads are narrow and the pace is slow, which suits the island perfectly. Traffic drives on the left, a holdover from British colonial days, so take it easy at first. Many guests also enjoy walking or biking, especially around Dunmore Town.

Reverie guests can have a clean, fully charged or fueled golf cart waiting at the dock when they arrive. Ask our team when you book.

Island Time Is Real

Things move at their own pace on Briland. Shops may open a little late, lunch may take a little longer, and plans are made to be flexible. Our best advice is to embrace it. Island time is the whole point.

Money

The Bahamian dollar is pegged one-to-one with the U.S. dollar, and U.S. dollars are widely accepted. Credit cards work at most restaurants and shops, but it’s wise to carry some cash for taxis, water taxis, tips and smaller vendors.

What to Pack

  • Light, breathable clothing and a couple of dressier outfits for dinners out
  • Reef-safe sunscreen, a hat and sunglasses
  • Sandals and water shoes for rocky snorkel spots
  • A light layer for breezy evenings, especially in winter
  • Your passport, and a little patience for travel days

Respect the Island

Harbour Island is a small, close-knit community. A friendly “good morning” goes a long way, swimwear is best kept for the beach and pool, and leaving the beaches as beautiful as you found them keeps them pink for the next visitor.

When to Visit

The island is lovely year-round. Winter and spring bring dry, sunny days and the busiest season; summer is hotter and quieter, with calm seas that are ideal for boating; and fall offers the fewest crowds, with a chance of tropical weather. See our seasonal guide for more.
